Executive Director

Ashe County Recovery and Restoration


Position Type: Independent Contractor (1099)


Hours: Between 20-30 hours per week, with flexibility to work additional hours as organizational needs require.


Compensation: Commensurate with experience.


Contract Term: Initial one-year contract, renewable based on organizational needs, performance, and funding availability.


Position Summary

Ashe County Recovery and Restoration is seeking an energetic, community-minded leader to serve as its Executive Director. This position will lead the organization's next chapter, under the direction of the Executive Board, as it strengthens long-term disaster recovery efforts, expands community partnerships, supports recovery initiatives, and builds a sustainable foundation for the future.


The Executive Director serves as the primary representative of the organization and works closely with community partners, volunteers, funders, local government, faith-based organizations, and recovery agencies to help Ashe County residents recover, rebuild, and thrive.


This is a unique opportunity to help shape the future of long-term recovery in Ashe County while building a strong, community driven organization dedicated to resilience, collaboration, and service.


Key Responsibilities

• Provide day-to-day leadership and management of the organization.
• Grant writing, fundraising, donor relations, and grant reporting.
• Support, recruit, develop, and maintain an engaged and effective Board of Directors.
• Build and maintain partnerships with community organizations, government agencies, churches, businesses, and recovery partners.
• Oversee organizational operations, budgets, and compliance requirements in partnership with the Board Treasurer, accountant, and finance team.
• Coordinate recovery efforts and collaborate with disaster case management and recovery partners.
• Support disaster recovery case management efforts as needed, including resource coordination, client advocacy, and participation in unmet needs processes.
• Represent the organization at meetings, community events, and public gatherings.
• Assist with community outreach, newsletters, social media, website updates, and public communications.
• Maintain organizational records, reports, and data systems.

• Assume Secretary duties for the Executive Board, as needed.
• Help identify community needs and opportunities to strengthen long-term recovery efforts.


Qualifications

• Associate degree preferred; equivalent education, training, or experience will be considered.
• Two to three years of leadership, supervisory, project management, nonprofit, community development, social services, disaster recovery, or related experience preferred.
• Strong communication, organizational, and relationship-building skills.
• Ability to work collaboratively with diverse groups of people and organizations.
• Basic understanding of nonprofit operations, budgeting, grants, financial reporting, and board  governance.
• Familiarity with nonprofit compliance requirements, including IRS Form 990 filings, charitable solicitation licensing, and organizational reporting requirements.
• Comfortable using spreadsheets, databases, case management systems, email, virtual meeting platforms, and common office software.
• Experience with social media, website updates, marketing, or community outreach is helpful.
• Experience in disaster case management, social services, housing assistance, volunteer coordination, or community-based services is highly desirable.
